Pocket Radio is a push-to-talk radio app. It's built to know as little about you as possible: your voice is end-to-end encrypted, nothing you say is ever recorded, and the server's logs contain nothing that identifies you or your phone. There's no account: we never ask for your name, email address or phone number. (How we protect you explains the design, including what the server can and can't see.)
This policy covers Pocket Radio's own servers. If your group uses a server run by someone else, that person is responsible for the data on it.
Pocket Radio is made and run by an individual developer in the United Kingdom, trading as Pocket Radio, who is responsible for your data (the "data controller" under UK GDPR). Contact: support@pocketradio.net.
When you talk, your phone encrypts your voice with a key that only the members of that channel have. Our server passes the encrypted audio on to them; it can't decrypt it, and neither can we. Voice is never recorded or stored, by the server or by the app.
Only what's needed for channels to work:
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your phone's public keys and an ID derived from them (random-looking; not your phone number, name or hardware ID) | So your phone can sign in and others can check messages really come from it | Until you delete your data |
| Channels you create: name, a hashed password (we can't read the password), and your public key as owner | So others can find and join the channel | Until you delete the channel or your data |
| Memberships: your callsign in each channel, signed by the channel owner | So members can see who's who | Until you leave, are removed, or delete your data |
| Join requests: your callsign and public key | So the owner can approve you | Until answered |
| Encrypted copies of channel keys | So members' phones can collect the key; the server can't open them | While you're a member |
| The channel's groups, if the owner sets them up: group names and colours, who is in which group, and whose GPS positions each group may see, signed by the owner | So everyone in the channel sees the same groups | Until the owner changes them, or the channel is deleted |
| Encrypted copies of group position keys (only when the owner restricts GPS) | So members' phones can collect the keys for the groups they may see; the server can't open them | While you may see that group |
| Your last reported GPS position, only if you turn on "Share GPS position". It's encrypted on your phone with the channel's key, or, when the owner restricts GPS, with your group's key, so we can't read it | So people in the channel can see where your phone last was, for example if it stops working | 24 hours after your last report; or, if you choose "Retain last GPS position report indefinitely", until you turn that or sharing off. Turning sharing off, or deleting your data, removes it at once |
| Invite codes | Short codes that point to a channel | 24 hours |
| Sign-in sessions (stored only as a hash) | So your phone stays signed in | 24 hours |
We don't ask for your name, email address or phone number, and we don't collect contacts, photos or any other data from your phone. Your location is only used if you turn on "Share GPS position" (off unless you choose it), and only people in your channel can read it (or, if the channel owner restricts GPS, only the groups they allow).
The server keeps short technical logs to find faults: which kind of request was made (for example "create channel"), whether it worked, and how long it took. They never contain anything that identifies you or your phone: no IP addresses, device IDs, channel IDs, callsigns, phone model or message contents. Logs are deleted after at most 7 days.
Like any internet service, our server sees your phone's IP address while it's connected, because it needs it to send you audio. It isn't logged or stored.
The app keeps your settings, your callsign, the channels you're in, and their keys (protected by Android's secure key storage) on your phone. Uninstalling the app removes them.
There are no adverts, analytics or trackers in Pocket Radio, and we never sell or share data.
Channel owners approve who joins and can remove people. Anyone can block a member (you won't hear them) or report them. Reports are sent by email to us, so we only see what you choose to send.
In the app: Settings → Privacy → Delete my data on this server. This removes everything listed above straight away. More options: Delete your data.
Under UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data, have it corrected or deleted, or object to how it's used. Email support@pocketradio.net. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Pocket Radio isn't intended for children under 13.
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
